Last w-e, we had a gala dinner organized by the expat association in Hyderabad. Meg dressed up for the occasion in a very nice sari. She was hoping to ask one of the cleaning ladies in our building to show her how to put it on but they were nowhere to be seen when we needed them. So in the end, we looked up on Youtube how to put a Sari and after a few tries, voila!
We met some interesting people at the dinner: an Indonesian couple, whose husband had worked for a Filipino company, an American couple whose wife was of Indian origin but born in Canada, and who had previously spent 3 years in Nigeria for P&G, a Dutch guy on a short term basis for Deloitte who was a fan of music and knew Deus (Belgian band), an American - Indian lady who Meg had met before and who is very friendly and a French guy who has been living in Hyderabad for 5 years, working for a French cement company.
During the dinner there was a raffle organized in favour of some charities. Meg did not really want to buy tickets at first and was telling me she never won anything. I said that it was for a good cause ("puppies" as one of the charities was looking after abandoned puppies) and so I went and, guess what, we won another sari! There must be some good karma in there after all the efforts we had made to adapt the local customs!
